Would like to share with our readers on this great article from Pete. We at www.luk4all.com has always regard Pete as a great story writer, but this time we thinks he really wrote from his heart. Now go ahead click on the link here before you continue reading below.
Anyway we at www.luk4all.com, thinks building hundreds of public universities in Malaysia might just introduce more "siswazah yang menganggur", instead we should be focusing on improving the quality of our universities and students.
Some pointers on why we think our universities ranking drop every years……. Bear in mind students and lecturers made up the universities, infrastructures are not the main thing.
-
Most of our best Bumiputra top students are all sent to overseas from matriculation program. Those that did not make the cut or did not want to go overseas are only sent to local universitities.
-
Most Chinese and Indians top studetnts are sent overseas with JPA scholarship. Again we are left with students that did not make the cut to JPA and did not want to go overseas (which is very rare).
-
Our best lecturers are offered higher money to join NUS, NTU or private universities.
Maybe its time we re-think how we value our people, the top brains, in the universities rather than building fanciful buildings.
Comments:
That's true. We have all the hardwares but not the software. Think this is our Malaysian leader's mindset. We should instead focus more on software rather than the software.
It's like we are running on CPU Quad Core, but we are only using window 3.1 to run on OS.

Hoping the Malaysian goverment will provide the education opportunities to all the qualified Malaysian students up to the univercity level irrespective of RACE ,RELIGIONS because all Malaysians are born inside this country. The goverment MUST change her policy because all the countries around Malaysia is catching up . The Barisan National goverment must show to the Ra'yats that Malaysia Bolih !

Being our premier university (University of Malaya,MU) :
2004 : rank 103 (pls correct me if I am at wrong) 2005 : rank 169 2006 : rank 192
I still remembered way back in 1970's, University of Malaya is the only university that accepts the creams of the elite group. 30 years later, to be honest with you, I will not consider AT ALL for any local universities if I can afford to send my children to overseas. I do not want them to earn a degree that no other countries are recognizing their degree.
Note : I would to re-affirm that I have no means to humilate those who study locally, in fact, many local students are very brilliant and are elite group that cannot afford to go overseas for their education. It is just that the local government is trying to lower down the education standards so that more bumis are qualifying for their degree. In this way, inevitably being push out in the ranking.
I have many relatives' children who rejected the offer from MU, instead, they prefer to send them overseas or send them to TAR University.
I still remembered way back 20 years ago when I was studied in UK, many JPA malay scholars are receiving handsome allowance from JPA, their allowance is more than sufficient for them to survive. It was clearly seen that only a very small % of Malays are serious in their study. More than 80% are required to stay back during summer period to resit for their exam in Sept. And these are so-called the elite bumis are well pampered by the government and many of them are driving big cars such as BMW when they are as a student. Many of them that I knew are came from good and wealth of families.
Well, it is always unfair, but what to do ?

Well, think about the bright side. What didn't kill them, make them stronger. The under priviledged has work hard and their effort has paid off. You can see now their success in life (even they are in Malaysia with the discrimination around) or they are enjoying the great life in foreign land.. this are hard lesson that everyone has to learn. It would even be better if all Malaysian learn it the hard way...that you are not born with silver spoon by the government....what you reap is what you get.
But i can see now that the urban Malays are starting to change their mindset, and even some of the Malays are successful without the NEP. The ball is now on the government's court..they really need to carefully craft the policy to help all races. It will take time, but i'm hoping that my children's generation will be one day reading the the NEP abolishment in their history lesson. That will be the day, when our country really gotten the Independance.

Brethern, I would agreed on your comments.
The government needs to understand the root cause, rather than lowering down the local university standards to allow more malays to passed the exam. This really doesn't help them to also compete to the world. We must recognize and understand that we are no longer live on our own, the world is globalize now and it is indeed a borderless world that we all are live in now.
Take an analogy, if u have 1 and only 1 child in your family, will u decide to pamper him or her and give whatever you can to him or her ? I believe we tend to love them inside our heart, and punish them equally if they are at wrong. Ultimately, we want them to be able to make sensible judgement call, be able to stand on their own feet. Same thing applies goes to the so-called "bumiputra" group.
